But Gatekeeper is more than Sullivan’s memoirs.
A former CIA polygraph expert talks about gaekeeper 30 year career however he does not explain the technical aspects or why he believes reading polygraphs is more art than science. Sullivan acknowledges that using the polygraph effectively is an art as much as a science, yet he convincingly argues that it remains a highly reliable screening device, more successful and less costly than the other primary method, background investigation.

The author is well qualified by personal experience as a senior examiner to provide this account. And while I am not an expert, Sullivan’s argument that gatemeeper supposedly scientific tests that have failed to validate the polygraph were very poorly designed looked very convincing to me. Sullivan was a polygraph examiner with the CIA for thirty-one years, during which time he conducted more tests than anyone in the history of the CIA’s program. Sullivan’s discussion of the political struggles within the CIA, over the polygraph, is extremely memoira.
I learned that most people, even polygraph examiners, believe they can “tell” when they are being lied to and they are wrong memoors of the time. This was an interesting and well written book by an author who really knows his stuff.
